Title: Gypsy's Yellow Eye
Post by: 1984gojifan on May 08, 2015, 04:50:01 PM
Last week Bob told me that after May 15 he was gonna start making the repro Carseats ;D  so with that said, I'm gonna need advice to build her.

Does anyone know what the Best Brains method of how they made Gypsy's Eye Yellow???

Jef Zehnder said that it was kind of a mystery of how they did it, he used yellow tissue paper in his build, but I want some thing like close ups from the lip-reading segment 512- Mitchell, and the opening Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie.

I didn't know that the car seat project was supposed to be public knowledge yet... but now that it is, I'll be excited to buy one!

As for the yellow of the eye, I'd say that a trimmed to size yellow photo gel would do the job nicely.  Just add layers until you get the opacity you want.

Wait a minute Ron! I thought you had 2 real infant love seats? What happened?

I had 3... I sold one a while back...  I still have 2... one that's completely original, the other that's mostly prepped to be turned into a Gypsy.

Now that the cat is out of the bag, are there any updates regarding the reproduction seats?  I'd love to buy one.  Sounds like there are a number of us looking for one.

Cheers!

Ted.

I actually just got an email from Bob today.
He is not currently making or selling any Gypsy parts. Was wondering if anyone has heard of another source for replica car seats.

It would be great if someone who HAS an original seat would scan it or loan it to someone who could GET it scanned, and then distribute the scan and let people 3-D print that sucker. Be a lot less hassle that trying to cast it or make molds for fiberglass, etc.

I have the resources to get the baby seat scanned, but I lack the parts to do so

The seat is larger than you think... and have tons of undercuts.  Trying to have one 3D printed would be way more expensive than casting one out of resin or fiberglass.

For those of us who don't have a seat blank, original or repro, there aren't many other options. Expensive or not, I'm guessing some of us would pay it. Even if you didn't print it, with a scan you could CNC a mold out of foam or something and then lay up some fiberglass or whatever. Regardless, anything would be better than what we have now, which is nothing. If repros were available, this discussion would be moot. But until then...

Anybody out there want to loan out or sell a seat to get it scanned? I'm betting there are enough creative people out there to get something working if we had an image.

I do have a completely intact seat.  A few people around here do, I believe.  Just what would the procedure be?

It would just be a matter of getting the seat to someone with a scanner. My daughter took an art class at her university last year and they had a complete fab lab available, along with a nice 3D scanner that they let her use. Not saying the university would be happy about cranking out 3D printed car seats, but it wouldn't have been a problem to get the scan done. After that it's a matter of finding a fabricator who can either do the whole seat at once or do it in sections that could then be joined together. My kid just transferred to another school, and the new school has a scanner. I'll just have to see if she can get someone to let her use it.

If I can get access to the scanner, I'll let you know and see if we can work something out. I'm in northern VA, btw.

The reason why this (and a dozen other similar options) aren't already producing an endless supply of car seats is mostly due to the cost of the raw materials needed to print/reproduce the seat vs just finding and buying a seat.

Original seats are out there... you just have the dig for them.
