Title: Gypsy reproduction car seats?
Post by: Ron on May 25, 2011, 09:56:30 AM
Reproduction Infant Love Seats are supposedly on the horizon... if they were economical, would you buy one and build a Gypsy?

I would love to buy a car seat but several questions arise...if it's made of resin, how heavy would it be?  Also, resin ain't cheap.  If a engine block for Servo is between $35 to $55, then I would hate to think about how expensive a baby car seat would be.

But yeah, if it's a reasonable cost for a good quality piece, sure.

I just moved from south to central Florida last week. When I pulled my Love Seat down from the attic (no place to build bots in the old digs) I noticed some cracking on the edges that will need repair before turning it into Gypsy. While trying to decide how to proceed with the repair, I decided that making molds from fiberglass would probably be the way to go to make copies of the seat. A Gypsy made from fiberglass would be lighter and thinner than an original and not particularly expensive - material wise. For me, it would be a learning curve thing, I've never layed up glass before and would have to practice on something else first. I don't think vacuform is viable - too big of a pull, and RTV molds & resin casts too expensive.
Has anybody else tried fiberglass?

Hey gregg, what part of central Florida are you located at?  I'm in Tampa, lol.

I believe Fiberglass maybe a viable option.  Vacuumform may not work at all with some of the curves of the car seat, I'm assuming.

Everyone I've talked to says that fiberglass is the only way to go.  However a day will come soon when the seats stop changing hand amongst collectors, that's the real test.

Heh, perhaps we should start up a Century Infant Love Seat Registry. :p

The government already did that... and then destroyed all the car seats ;)

I'm in Orlando, maybe we should bring some bots to Gasparilla - Captain Jack Servo, and Captain Barcrowsa (ouch)
As for the Gypsy registry, I have one, found it at a thrift store ten years ago, paid $5, still has the original sticker on the side.
Since then I don't think I've seen any kind of carseat at a thrift store

Hahahahahaha.  Our bots would be destroyed at the end of the day if we brought them to Gasparilla. XD  I'm going to bring Crow and Servo to MetroCon in Tampa.  You should head over!  Bring the carseat too; I would love to see a Gypsy head in person, hahaha.

If only I got into Bot Building when MST3K was still in production.  It probably would've been soooo much easier to get one.

Do you think it would be possible to scratchbuild a seat?

Ron-
Has this project gone anywhere?  I do casting myself and would love to help out if I can.  Failing that I just want to be involved so I can get the parts I need to build Gypsy for my wife.

Randy at Lil' Monsters was working on this a while back... as well as a few others.

The main complaint I keep hearing is the weight that would be involved and the fact that it's a pretty narrow audience for the parts.

I hear you.  I know enough about making molds from my Proton Pack building to know that it can be done, but like you said who is buying?  Is there a real market for the seats for bot builders or is Gypsy like the PKE Meter?  That is to say few people acctually build one but all are amazed when the see someone who has.  If anyone can point me in the right direction lmk.  I would be one of the few, the proud, the Gypsy makers.  8)

On another note, Ron, would it be possible to to cut one of the seats to the appropiate Gypsy configuration and the cast those pieces for building Gypsy purposes.
Title: Re: Gypsy reproduction car seats?
Post by: Ron on December 21, 2011, 06:55:50 PM
I'm thinking that cutting and casting would be the only way to do it... and then another original car seat joins the hereafter. ;)

Cut mine the other night, filled the holes with apoxie and then fit it together to cut the holes for the hinge rod.  I cannot tell you how nervous I was when I started cutting into the lower jaw/ inner seat section.  This is not the first time I've used vintage parts or even expensive ones for a project, but just the night before I had brought the seat upstairs to wash it, and my daughter decided to sit in the now gutted part that becomes the head,  and started making car noises so I felt kind of guilty while prepping it to be used for Gypsy.  Hopefully, she'll like Gypsy more then she liked playing in Gypsy's head.   :P

Has anyone ever done a replica or the car seats.
Title: Re: Gypsy reproduction car seats?
Post by: Ron on February 19, 2013, 04:58:55 PM
Randy at Lil' Monsters was looking into it, but last I heard it would be cost prohibitive to do it out of resin.

Another guy was looking into doing it out of fiberglass, but I've never heard any updates... and it's been years.

Well lets see in the 70s/80s a Century infant love seat was about $35 but in the 70s/80s $35 would be like $100 so i couldnt imagine how much a reproduction seat would be nowadays  :-\

Gypsy is my grail... I have Tom and Crow, Cambot is almost done and the satellite is under production... Yet I just can't get a hand on that saucy purple vixen.

Bob Bukoski was looking into making Reproduction car seats, but he said it won't be easy, You probably need to make a BIG, HUGE rotocasting machine to replicate it. I would gladly pay an arm and a leg to build Gypsy.
Title: Re: Gypsy reproduction car seats?
Post by: Ron on February 14, 2015, 07:09:13 PM
I doubt there would be much of a market for a rotocast reproduction of the car seat once you figure in cost of materials.   I could see them easily being hundreds of dollars each... plus, all that resin wouldn't be light.

Still I have something of value, just today I found a Beanie Baby that was worth THOUSANDS of dollars, and the tag was still attached, it was one of those purple Princess Diana memorial Beanie babies.

If I sell it, and Bob makes reproduction love seats I'd love to buy several of those seats ;)

Could something like this be reproduced via some thick sheet vacuum forming from a base mold?

It would have to be one heck of a vacuform machine!

My brother met a guy that has a 3-D printer the size of a large desk and 3-D prints stuff for a living. He figured that It would be possible to duplicate an infant love seat in pieces.

Ron what are the dimensions of the seat? take a tape measurer and measure one of those spare seats you have, the outer shell and the inner seal. I AM DETERMINED TO BUILD HER, EVEN IF IT KILLS ME!  ;)

Bob told me that his guess is that her head will cost $150-$195 per copy and that it requires 5-7 times as much resin as a Money Lover Barrel and 3-4 hours of labor per seat. It's Great that he's thinking of us. I guess I'll become an amputee then. (kidding of course)  ;)

When will then be now?  :)

My kids & I just finished our Cambot build (with a working camera in it) and are ready for our next build.  Just need that stinkin' love seat!

I just joined the community.  Mostly because I want to build Gypsy next.

That price point ($150 - $195) is much better than I'd expected to pay as well.  I'd LOVE to get a reproduction if / when they become available.

Back to the garage to see if Crow's wonderful lime / gold is setting up without runs.

Cheers!

Ted.

On ebay earlier today, someone bought a nearly complete Gypsy head for almost $350.  There were 42 bids.  Clearly, there is an eager market for seats.

Just sayin'.

My eBay alerts failed me.  I have every name iteration of this thing saved and set up to alert me if one goes on sale, and I got no alerts.  :(

That said, I do already have a seat, so I'm glad (hopeful?) it went to a fan who wants to build their very own lovable - and yes, dare I say, huggable - Gypsy.

Maybe whoever got it will come here for advice!

Still wanting/needing one.
Someone has to do this at some point.
The OP mentioned them being “economical”. Hell, I’d be happy with nearly affordable at this point.
I’m really regretting unknowingly letting my first Gypsy get tossed by someone who “helped” me move back about 18 years ago. (Though you take what help you can get when you’re in a wheelchair.)

For the love of god. If someone has a seat, scan it and post the scan on thingiverse. You could 3d-print it in sections if you had to, join the sections, paint it, and be done. No it's not the simplest project, but it's extremely doable and there's no other source. And scanning doesn't sacrifice an original seat! For that matter, ALL the parts of ALL the bots should be scanned and available as 3D print files by now.
