Gypsy / GPC
« on: May 14, 2020, 09:57:53 AM »

Since it was a shock for many of us on the Social Distancing riff, there is a new version of Gypsy called GPC.  Rumor is that Gypsy was renamed to not offend the Romani people, but I think it was more that they cant get more carseats and wanted something easier to maneuver with on stage.  The good news for bot builders is that it means we can have a Gypsy that is not huge and cost more than a car.

Looks like the head is an Adora Baby doll Car seat:

Light looks like a Vision X inside a piece of PVC pipe with a handle:
But it could be any number of like chinese made lights.

Bottom Jaw looks like a lid

The end looks like a Folgers Coffee Can
The body is obviously a spring can covered in a fabric, likely a snake print - I have feelers out with fabric people.

The mouth mechanism is super clever.

Odds are everyone will miss this, but due to the Covid19 Quarantine the live shows are on hiatus.  So this Sunday AD, the live team will be riffing on a season 1 episode Moon Zero Two today at 1800 CST.  It will be on all their video feeds.

From the last backer update, but on twitter:

I am very hopeful for a quick turn around on this.  Another broadcaster will pick it up, hopefully not Disney...Now everyone get back to figuring out Growlers head and the Killbots body.

And there is now an official twitch channel:

Somehow we missed an Ardy breakdown here.  We have two distinct versions one for each season.
S1 Ardy:

No idea on parts, if I had to guess it is a plastic hazmat suit with some of the material off the back over a hat or helmet to give the helmet its shape.

S2 Ardy:

S2 Ardy's helmet is a Sandblasting helmet that is rebranded alot:
And what looks like a generic Beekeeping suit:
Harness is likely a Dickies Work Gear 57077 in black:

You know the drill, lets start id-ing:
The Airhockey table at 1:11 is a Sport Squad tabletop:
The Blower for the table is likely a generic World Dryer bathroom hand dryer.

If you somehow missed it AV club got some exclusive images of the new season, here they are in high resolution for easy download off my google album, but the original is here:

I believe the marionettes are:
Max - My Life As Beach Vacation Doll - Brunette Boy:

Kinga - My Life As Beach Vacation Doll - Brunette Girl:

The faces and eyes are fairly close, but I am not a doll expert.  I have asked my doll expert, Smits, but she has not gotten back to me.  No idea what the control bar above max is made out of.  My first thought was a body massager

The only important thing here is Max and Kingas watch.  No idea what it is, but the pattern is obviously based on the iwatch
possibly this image:

Bodys are the Disguise Master Chief kids costume reconfigured - back is front kneecap is moved down:
Breakdown - apologizes to the color blind, working in MS Paint

Drumset is Best Choices Products Kid Drumset:

No idea on Growlers Piano.

The fire pot is obvious, a silk imitation fire pot.  It is held on with a standard Everbilt shelf bracket ($8 USD at Home Depot) - the same one that I use to use to hold up my projector...  But I havent figured out any of the hard parts specifically yet.  Based on the trigger guard and the obvious air tank and pressure gauge, I am guessing it is based on a paintball gun.

Yeah so the Kinga gun is a modied tshirt cannon:

So a late night at the office and the wife being out of town gives the world this mismash of data

Wheaton Headset: - David Clark aviation headset, likely an HT-30:
Desk Mic: 60s Calrad Space Age Mic:
This is not the specific one, or if it is the one in the show has a different connector.
Chair: unknown

Kinga Panel:

3x square buttons = Unknown
Center button = Mushroom head push button
3x round buttons = bottoms of easter eggs
Rubber tubing
Mic on back desk = looks like a Shure Super 55, but I don’t think they would use that as a background prop.

Backjack cockpit left to right:

Left Panel: Left half is a Grass Valley secondary video editing panel mounted sideways, right half is unknown – I imagine this was handmade.
TV – late 2000s Westinghouse or Samsung tv
Drumset - PDP by DW FS Series Drum Kit Red to Black:
Right panel – Grass Valley Kayak with some extra parts.

Backjack control panel

Back panel = a print out – same one used by Wil Wheaton – like (left to right): ly the control panel for the Backjack is one that was used by the puppets.  It has the print out all the way across.
Box on Panel = Unknown – looks like an old mainframe panel or an analogue synth panel – like a Serge.
Seat = Unknown – I have feelers out with a buddy who knows cars.  My gut is a mid 90s VW Eurovan seat.
Steering Wheel = wide center steering wheel with top and bottom cut off and the ends coated with yellow plasticdip
Jonahs Headset = Another David Clark HT-30 headset and  Sennheiser headphones
Speaker = generic full range speaker with a yellow cone with a square plate.
Joystick = Wilco Atari 2600 Command Joystick – Bat Handle.
Screen = green screen box
Right Panel = Another Grass Valley Video Switcher.  The upper right corner is the GVG key block

As we all know, boneheads came from Inframan:

But those super soldiers need to be represented by the masses:

So we found some motorcycle helmets and started making the conversion:

The original Motorcycle helmets used have been identified, but when you find a close enough helmet for $5 its hard to say no.  Despite my crappy bondo work...

Other MST3K Related Bots / Servo Hat

For those who did not make it to an On Tour show, there was a great invention exchange that involved Jonah showing off three hats:

A bone head, a Crow, and a Servo.

Well yesterday we were out and about and Smits found a similar helmet:

So after an hour of cleaning and sanding it, a coat of Krylon 2in1 White and a coat of Rustoleum 2in1 flat red:

The helmet is a 187 skate pads helmet:

In the sketch Jonah mentions it is a baseball helmet, but it looks alot more like a skateboarders helmet.  The rest of the build is standard servo, carousel, pauldron, shoulders, arms, and hands.  I will use spare shoulders and pauldrons, arms will be made from scratch and the hands will be spare Waverly hands.

It looks 3d printed, note the lines on the curves, but in the offchance it is not.  I am thinking it is likely a candle holder.

The colors are not spraycan lids like the previous model.  It looks like resin to me, but it could just be a set of glass candle holders:

They do sell them not tapered, that is just the only picture I could find with similar colours.

Any thoughts?

From Season 12 episode 7 Land that Time Forgot:

His body is obviously a Servo gumball machine

Legs are plastic jointed snakes:
with either braided pvc mesh for cable management or tulle strung through it:

Head looks like a jumbo plastic Easter egg covered in plastic gemstones, blocks, and buttons.

Photos Galore! / Season 11 viewing party

We had movie sign last week:

All bots were scratch built after 20 years of garage sailing - with Bob parts for Servos engine and hands, and crows shoulders. Gypsy is the wrong carseat and her stand broke, so the Gonk that holds spare power and ethernet cables had to fill in.  I have a second servo from a Bob kit that I take to shows.  Crow is now home bound after someone tried to steal him from my wife...or until I can find more of his paint and build a Bob one.  I do not suggest taking a Gypsy to a con without a wheeled cart of some sort.  She is heavy.

We had ten people show up and it was good fun with waffles with either normal or hot chicken.  Reptilicus was followed up with local favorite: Merlin's Shop of Mystic Wonders.

Other MST3K Related Bots / Waverly
« on: April 13, 2017, 10:47:28 AM »

If somehow you did not see any of the new show promos there is a new bot.  Shown a couple times at meet and greets, Waverly is another found object puppet that was promoted from Joels Basement bots:

As you can see the shoulders and arms have changed since the basement bot.

I have figured out the bulk of the parts:
Head - child watering can with the sprinkler removed and placed on top:

Shoulders - Sandcastle wall mold (close enough that I can add a part and re mold it):

Mouth - Sandcastle mold:

Arms - Infant slider toy pieces - I will fab out of wood
Rods for arms - Welding Rods (already use those on my rod and arm puppets)
Hands - Doll hands of some kind, I have someone looking into that for me.
His mouth operates on an actuator, just like the new Servo and Crow.

Body is the mystery piece.  My best guess is a square gear shifter:
But that does not account for the base with the "beltbuckle" like piece.  For a convention next month I may fabricate it out of styrofoam, but I want to find the right piece.  Any ideas?  I am ok in not having the correct sandcastle parts (there is not a database of them and they are seasonal low end pieces that apparently change every few years), but the body is kind of important.  The yellow in the basement bot makes me think it is a flashlight or a child toy but I cannot find anything that is that shape.

Any ideas?
