Money Lover Barrel
« on: May 03, 2013, 03:48:42 PM »
Hi folks!

First time poster!

Anyway, I recently purchased a resin Money Lover Barrel from a noted bot builder, and when I got it I realized it looked a little, well... not symmetrical. Specifically, when I look down at it from above it's not perfectly round. Looking at it from any other angle you don't notice it, only from above. Is this something inherent in the original Money Lover Barrel, an artifact of toy design before computer assistance?

Thanks in advance! I'm excited to be here!

I'm guessing that either the original barrel in which it was casted from was warped, or as the resin cured it warped.
I don't believe each barrel was deformed as it came off the line.

All MLBs are warped in some way or another.   Even original ones are lumpy or misshapen to some degree.

I wouldn't worry about it too much... once it's painted, you're the only one who'll know.

If it's absolutely eating you up inside, there's an easy fix... just heat the area you feel is out of whack, and apply gentle pressure from the inside to round things out.

You could, but only if you're on a budget.  If you're gonna build a replica Tom Servo puppet, you might as well invest in getting a part that's accurate, strong/sturdy and known to fit with everything else.  I've seen Servo's with Barrel of Monkeys for the torso and they just don't look right, IMO.

The Barrel of Monkeys barrel is too tall and narrow in my opinion.

At some point in the late 90's, Jack Daniel's made these little commemorative barrels... which were pretty darn close to the same size of the Money Lover Barrel.

The only trouble is they aren't textured like the MLB nor do they have the raised rings.... but if you couldn't manage anything else, it might work.

Max is right though...  buying a resin replica barrel is really the way to go.

No... I think these all belong to Neil Bridges, but I can't remember for sure.

You definitely don't want to use an original barrel (regardless of price)... they're made of 43 year old thin brittle plastic.

For my first servo I made a custom barrel by making a base then using peices of cardboard that stick out

I'm really curious, how do you roto-cast a MLB?

Do you cast it with the bottom opened up so it can be hollow?

Please explain the casting process

thanks

Step 1)  Make a mold of an original MLB

Step 2)  Do this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ADdDQNEqos
