Pearl's Widowmaker *Updated*
« on: July 04, 2011, 09:47:56 PM »
A recent (as of July 4th 2011) eBay auction gave some good up close pics of the original Widowmaker miniature used for the opening sequence of MST3K's 7th, 8th, and 9th seasons.

The original VW diecast car is made by French model car maker Solido.  It's model VM Combi (Kombi) 1966 1/19 scale.

For those with a more daring approach to prop making, here's the original fullsize prop.  The picture is from the 2nd time the vehicle was auctioned.  I guess it never actually ran because I remember it being sold without an engine.

I just hope its in good hands, this being a Samba VW Bus I'm not sure if it'd be better to leave it as is or restore it, I'd at least stick an engine in it.

Most old VWs that need restoration have the engines removed since its pretty easy, so chances are it didn't have an engine when Best Brains got it.

What other auction pictures do you have?

I started a couple of other threads under this forum for the ones where I've got pictures of the COAs...

Jeepers, those aren't cheap!

Ah, who am I kidding.  My wallet and I both know how this'll probably end...  ;)

I found this one a couple of weeks ago.  The only major difference is the fifth window in the back, which isn't on the original miniature, but IS on the actual full sized bus.  It was only $10, and I found it at Rite Aid.  It would make a suitable cheaper version for anyone else interested in building a Widowmaker!

Which version are you talking about?

I have a Salido bus and have long been looking for the engines and radar dish.  I haven't been able to find anything close enough to get me excited about building it.  It looks to me like the matches they used on the Salido version have melted the end of the thrusters so that ruled out metal to me.  They remind me of a lid for a bottle of olive oil or something, but the ridges do not look to be spiraled like they would need to be to twist on.

I'm not seeing brass hose nozzle.  Any I see in a web search show the basic shape, but nothing coming close to having the ridges.  My theory is they got cut off of some thrift store item.

I believe he's talking about the actual Widowmaker prop. See the threads?
